Abacus maths calculation11/22/2023 ![]() ![]() Some examples of sutras are "By one more than the one before", "All from 9 & the last from 10", and "Vertically & Crosswise". The system is based on 16 Vedic sutras or aphorisms, which are actually word-formulae describing natural ways of solving a whole range of mathematical problems. These ancient scriptures were rediscovered by Sri Bharati Krsna Tirthaji (1884-1960) and he translated the complex text into simpler understandable mathematics. Hindu philosophy is based on Veda-s (ancient scriptures written in Sanskrit, some say as old as 5000 B.C.) and mathematics translated from these texts is termed as Vedic Mathematics. Vedic Mathematics has no legal definition. Abacus use can build confidence, provide a sense of achievement, promote intuitive thinking, enhance problem-solving capability, stimulate creativity and improve concentration and mental endurance. ![]() Abacus math is a technique derived from this very old technique and fits right into the modern day world. However it was in China the abacus was innovated further and used heavily in day-to-day life for calculations. Over the period abacus has evolved into different types as it traveled across the world. The abacus is an ancient tool invented during Greek and Roman times. Before we indulge straight into the differences let us first know what these two methods are. These techniques are: 1) Abacus Math and 2) Vedic Math. With either of this technique students are able to do large and complex calculations in their head without need of any modern day electronic devices. Abacus learning helps in overall mental development and intelligence of a child.Today two different ancient methods are available for school students to conquer math.It improves power of imagination as they have to imagine and operate abacus in their minds. It helps foster greater sense of numbers as students get to play with numbers a lot.It helps to enhance the power of visualization and thinking through pictures as students learn to create mental image of abacus while preforming mathematical operations.Improvement in concentration, focus and accuracy. It helps in developing a photographic memory.Abacus learning at a young age has multiple benefits. Research studies have shown that starting abacus learning at a very young age is useful in activating brains of kids. Learning to use abacus can help develop this right brain/left brain coordination. ![]() Researchers consider the completion of abacus learning as the mastery of mental calculation. Recent studies have proven that abacus method of mental calculation is extremely effective in activating the right brain. This improves the coordination between left and right brains. In the abacus method of mental calculation, learners manipulate abacus beads in their heads to carry out a calculation. These two work together to allow us to function as humans. It controls three dimensional sense, creativity and artistic senses. The right brain is referred to as the analog brain. ![]() It controls reading, writing, calculation and logical thinking. The left brain is also referred to as the digital brain. Human brain is basically divided into two parts left brain and right brain. He further states that, “We can activate the nerve cells by providing “stimuli” like moving fingers and talking aloud”. Toshio Hayashi, Director, Research Institute for Advanced Science and Technology (RIAST) is of the view that, starting abacus learning at a very young age, is useful in activating the brain of kids. It has now been proven as a complete brain development tool over last two decades. Abacus is con sidered to be the first calculator in Japan and has played a significant role in the educational development of the country. It was used in the ancient times for calculating numbers through basic arithmetic system. It is comprised of vertical rods with sliding beads and a fixed bar across the rods. We use simple abacus study tutorials that help children learn while playing.Ībacus (also called Soroban in Japan) is a centuries old rectangular wooden instrument used to do calculations based on the decimal system. Mental abacus is a system for performing rapid and precise arithmetic by manipulating (bead movements) a mental image of an abacus. Students start with physical Abacus to learn numbers and mathematical operations and then progress to mental abacus. Our specially designed curriculum is tailored to enhance mental capabilities of a child using Abacus as one of the major tools. Abacus Math Institute (AMI) offers a complete mental development program for the kids between the age group of 4.5-15 years. ![]()
